Once trained by
the Traumatology Institute, you can submit a request for “Certificate of
Completion”. At the same time you can
request to have your name entered into our responder database. This places you in a position to become part
of an international network of professionals who are ready to respond to
crises. Although there is no current
deployment system operating through the Traumatology Institute (Canada) that
remains a long-term goal.
Your training
with the Traumatology Institute curriculum will prepare you to provide caring,
qualified service to those in need.
This program is also an excellent professional development
opportunity. Nurses, health care
professionals, emergency service personnel, social workers, mental health
counselors and psychologists, police officers, firefighters,
religious/spiritual counselors, and others will keep current on the latest
theories and practices in traumatology.
It is the aim of the Traumatology Institute, to provide training that will
help you become better prepared to manage critical events and assist
traumatized individuals, groups or communities within your field of work.

INTERNATIONAL CERTIFICATION
An internationally recognized certification process is
currently operating through the Academy of Traumatology’s Commission on
Certification and Accreditation (COCA).
COCA recognizes the Institute’s training programs and provides
internationally recognized certifications.

In addition, the Institute training
programs are recognized by the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress http://www.aaets.org. They have agreed to partner with the
Institute by offering their highly recognized designations for students who

Mission Statement
Dedicated to alleviating trauma around the world through research, education, and service.
MISSION: The Traumatology Institute is committed to reducing the deleterious effects of trauma on individuals, families, communities, and entire societies through service, education, and research. It accomplishes this by bringing together health and mental health professionals from a wide array of disciplines from around the world to develop cutting edge treatment approaches and training programs in the field of Traumatology and by working with
affiliated organization to plan and implement comprehensive disaster/crisis mental health response systems.
The International Traumatology Institute was founded at the Florida State University under the direction of Charles R. Figley, Ph.D., a professor in the School of Social Work. Dr. Figley and his clinical research team have joined in numerous humanitarian efforts, providing information, education, consultation and treatment for individuals and communities who suffer the effects of trauma. These efforts eventually resulted in the creation of the Green Cross Projects, which represents the humanitarian and service partner of the Traumatology Institute, to provide long-term rehabilitative assistance to victims of disasters, beginning with the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995.
In 1998, the Traumatology Institute (Canada) was established in Toronto,
Ontario, Canada.
The Traumatology Institute benefits and the public by establishing, maintaining and
offering educational opportunities, experience and ethics criteria for the practice of trauma treatment. The Institute accomplishes this by:
Recognizing individuals who have met the established requirements as Traumatologists and Compassion Fatigue Specialists.
Affiliating with selected professional organizations and educational institutions around the world to offer the Institute’s cutting-edge curriculum that leads to traumatologist certification.
Linking with the Academy of Traumatology (COCA) and American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress (AAETS) to offer certification or accreditation of trained
Traumatologists.
ORGANIZATIONAL CAPACITY: In summary, the Traumatology Institute (Canada) is internationally reknown for its resources and efforts in the field of traumatology. Its major strengths include:
Service: The Institute works with the Certified Traumatologists to assist communities in the design and implementation of comprehensive, state-wide disaster mental health and crisis counseling response systems that are cost-effective and compatible with local conditions/needs and that utilize members of the Traumatology Institute, made up of professionals who have been certified as Traumatologists.
Education: The Institute offers exemplary training programs designed for professionals from a wide array of disciplines and levels of experience who provide relief, support, and/or treatment to those who are directly or indirectly experiencing the effects of a traumatic situation. Research: The Institute’s clinical research staff engage in research aimed at improving our understanding and treatment of those who suffer the effects of trauma, both directly and indirectly. The Accelerated Recovery Program for Compassion Fatigue, an innovative training and treatment program that leads to certification as a Compassion Fatigue Specialist, represents one example of this type of practical research.
